The Dominus Flevit Church on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem is considered to be one of the most beautiful churches in the area. Its dome is in the shape of a large teardrop. This teardrop shape originates from the church’s name (which translates from Latin as “The Lord Wept”). This refers to the weeping of Jesus during His prediction of the future destruction of Jerusalem. The Dominus Flevit Church is built on top of the remains of a Byzantine monastery and ancient graves from the time of the Second Jewish Temple. The large teardrop is only one representation of Jesus’ weeping – in the Dominus Flevit Church also stand four pillars that are reminiscent in their shape of the bottles that were meant to collect those teardrops.
